EU Entry/Exit System (EES) Starts April 2026

The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) goes fully mandatory on April 10, 2026 across all 29 Schengen external borders — confirmed by the European Commission with no delay. Passport stamps are replaced by biometric registration (fingerprints + facial photo) for every non-EU traveler on short stays, including UK, US, Canadian, and Australian passport holders.

The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is going fully mandatory on April 10, 2026 across all 29 Schengen Area external borders. This is confirmed by the European Commission — there is no delay. The era of the ink passport stamp is officially over.

💡What Is the EU Entry/Exit System and Why Does It Matter?

  • EES is not a visa requirement. It is a digital biometric border management system that completely changes how your visa or visa-free entry is processed and tracked every single time you cross into or out of Europe.
  • It replaces manual passport stamping at all Schengen external borders with automated electronic tracking, storing biometric data and travel dates in a secure EU-wide database for 3 years.

🛂What Replaces the Passport Stamp?

  • First visit: Your passport is scanned, fingerprints collected, and facial photo taken at dedicated kiosks
  • Future visits: Quick biometric scan only — fingerprints or face recognition
  • Your data is stored for 3 years in the EU digital database
  • The 90/180-day Schengen rule is now automatically calculated and enforced by the system

🌍Who Does This Affect?

  • Every non-EU traveler on a short stay of up to 90 days, including:
  • 🇬🇧UK passport holders
  • 🇺🇸Americans
  • 🇨🇦Canadians
  • 🇦🇺Australians
  • 🇯🇵Japanese
  • 🇸🇬Singaporeans
  • All other non-EU nationalities — whether you need a Schengen visa or not. EU and EEA citizens with long-term resident permits are exempt.

⚠️What You Must Know Before Traveling to Europe After April 10

  • Allow extra time at the border for your first EES registration — especially at busy airports during peak season
  • Processing times increased up to 70% at some airports during the phased rollout
  • Overstaying your 90-day limit is now automatically detected and recorded digitally — there is no hiding it anymore
  • Entry refusals are also recorded in the EES database
  • If entering via Eurostar or Eurotunnel, biometric checks happen before you leave the UK — not on arrival in France

What You Should Do Now

  • 👉Budget extra time at Schengen border control on your first entry after April 10
  • 👉Every traveler must present their own individual passport, including children
  • 👉Keep your 90-day Schengen allowance in mind — the system now tracks it automatically and precisely
  • 👉ETIAS (the separate pre-travel authorization, ~€20) is still expected in Q4 2026. Do NOT apply on any third-party site — only the official EU portal will be valid
