UAE Waives Visa Overstay Fines for Stranded Travelers: War Relief 2026

The UAE Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security has waived all visa overstay fines incurred from February 28, 2026 onwards for travelers stranded due to regional airspace closures and flight cancellations.

If your visa expired while you were stuck in the UAE because of cancelled flights and closed airspace, you can breathe. The UAE just made a massive official call in your favor.

📋What Was Announced?

  • 🏛️The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) announced on Wednesday, March 4, that overstay fines will be waived for anyone unable to depart due to the closure of airspace and the temporary suspension of flights.
  • Fines incurred from Saturday, February 28, 2026 onwards are fully waived for those unable to leave the country because of flight cancellations and delays.

👥Who Qualifies?

  • 📌The waiver applies to fines incurred on or after February 28, 2026, and covers:
  • ➡️Departure permit holders who exceeded their permitted grace period
  • ➡️Visit and tourist visa holders whose duration of stay has lapsed
  • ➡️Cancelled residency permit holders whose departure was hindered following cancellation

⚠️Why This Happened

  • 🌍Since the beginning of March 2026, rising regional tensions following coordinated US and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets, and Iran's subsequent missile and drone responses, led several Gulf states to restrict or close their airspace.
  • ✈️These developments triggered widespread airline suspensions, cancelled flights and long queues at airports as thousands of travellers were left stranded across the region.
  • 💸Under normal UAE rules, daily overstay fines of Dh50 are typically applied with zero grace period. Those fines are now fully suspended for war-stranded travelers.

📂What Documents Do You Need?

  • 📎Travellers seeking relief must provide supporting documentation such as cancelled ticket receipts, airline notifications or official airport advisories confirming the disruption.
  • 🏢The ICA has advised affected individuals to follow official immigration channels and cooperate with authorities during the verification process.

What You Should Do Right Now

  • 👉Do NOT go to the airport unless your airline has confirmed a departure slot
  • 👉Screenshot and save all flight cancellation emails as proof
  • 👉Check your visa status via the ICP Smart Services portal or app
  • 👉Visit a Customer Happiness Centre at any UAE airport if you need in-person help
  • 🛡️The ICP has also issued entry visas to 15,327 travellers at affected airports, enabling them to stay in the country until the regional crisis subsides.
  • 📲This is an evolving situation. Stay close to official ICP and GDRFA channels for updates.
