Options for US citizens who want to work or stay longer

Employment Visa (employer-sponsored)

The standard route for US citizens who have a job offer from a Hong Kong employer. Your employer submits the application to the Hong Kong Immigration Department. The visa is initially granted for up to 2 years and is renewable. You must apply before arriving in Hong Kong to work — you cannot convert a visitor admission to an employment visa inside Hong Kong except in limited circumstances.

Top Talent Pass Scheme (TTPS)

Introduced in 2022, the TTPS allows two categories of applicants to stay in Hong Kong for 2 years without needing a job offer first: (1) individuals with an annual salary of HKD 2.5 million or above in the year before application, or (2) graduates of the world's top 100 universities who have at least 3 years of work experience, or are fresh graduates within 5 years of graduation. TTPS holders can seek employment after arrival and then convert to an Employment Visa.

Quality Migrant Admission Scheme (QMAS)

A quota-based points system for talented individuals without a prior job offer. Applicants are assessed under the General Points Test (factors include age, education, work experience, language, family) or the Achievement-based Points Test (for those with exceptional achievements). An annual quota applies and the scheme is competitive. Apply through the Hong Kong Immigration Department.

Student visa

US citizens enrolled in a full-time degree program at a Hong Kong university or approved institution require a student visa. Apply to the Hong Kong Immigration Department with your university acceptance letter and proof of funds (approximately HKD 120,000 or more per year). Students may work part-time during their studies subject to conditions.

Top Talent Pass Scheme — who qualifies

Track A — High earners

Annual salary of HKD 2,500,000 (approximately USD 320,000) or above in the 12 months before application. Proof of income such as tax records, employment contracts, and salary statements required.

Track B — Top university graduates

Degree from one of the world's top 100 universities as ranked by QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, or Academic Ranking of World Universities. Must have at least 3 years of work experience accumulated in the past 5 years. Exception: graduates within 5 years of graduation with no work experience can apply under a separate annual quota of 10,000.

Both tracks: TTPS holders are admitted for 2 years. After securing employment, holders apply to convert to an Employment Visa for long-term residence.
