Long-stay options for US citizens

Employment Pass (employer-sponsored)

The Employment Pass is the standard route for US citizens who have a job offer from a Malaysian employer. Your employer applies through the Expatriate Services Division (ESD) at the Malaysian Immigration Department. Three categories exist based on salary: Category I (monthly salary MYR 10,000+, pass valid up to 5 years), Category II (MYR 5,000–9,999, valid up to 2 years), Category III (MYR 3,000–4,999, valid up to 12 months). A minimum of 3 years relevant work experience is generally required. Apply before arriving in Malaysia — you cannot convert a visa-free entry to an Employment Pass inside Malaysia.

Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H)

MM2H is a government programme that allows foreigners to live in Malaysia on a long-term social visit pass without the right to work for Malaysian employers. The programme was significantly revised in 2021 and again in 2024. Current requirements include: a fixed deposit of MYR 500,000 (approximately USD 115,000) in a Malaysian bank, proof of offshore liquid assets of at least MYR 1,500,000 (approximately USD 345,000), and proof of monthly offshore income of at least MYR 40,000 (approximately USD 9,200). The pass is initially valid for 5 years and renewable. Holders may withdraw 50% of the fixed deposit after 1 year for approved expenses. MM2H holders cannot work for Malaysian employers but may invest in Malaysian businesses.

Dependent Pass

Spouses and unmarried children under 18 of Employment Pass holders can obtain a Dependent Pass, allowing them to live in Malaysia for the duration of the Employment Pass. Dependent Pass holders may apply for a Letter of Approval to work in Malaysia but it is not automatic.

Student Pass

US citizens enrolled in a full-time programme at a Malaysian institution recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education can apply for a Student Pass. Your institution applies on your behalf. Students may not work during their studies without a separate Letter of Approval.

MM2H — who should consider it

The Malaysia My Second Home programme suits US citizens who want to live in Malaysia long-term without working for a Malaysian employer. Typical applicants include retirees with pension income, remote workers with substantial savings, and investors. The high financial thresholds introduced in the 2021–2024 revisions make MM2H more suitable for high-net-worth individuals than general retirees. For those who cannot meet the MM2H thresholds, the 90-day visa-free entry remains the most practical option for extended visits — noting that repeated long stays may attract immigration scrutiny.

Employment Pass — step by step

  1. 1

Secure a job offer from a Malaysian employer who is registered and approved to hire expatriates.

  2. 2

Your employer submits an Employment Pass application through the Expatriate Services Division (ESD) online portal at esd.imi.gov.my.

  3. 3

Required documents include: your passport, offer letter or employment contract, educational certificates, and professional qualifications.

  4. 4

Processing typically takes 2–4 weeks. The Immigration Department may request additional documents.

  5. 5

Once approved, your employer receives an approval letter. You apply for your Employment Pass endorsement at the Malaysian Embassy or Consulate in the US, or in some cases it is processed upon arrival.

  6. 6

Travel to Malaysia and report to your employer. Your Employment Pass will be endorsed in your passport at the immigration office.

  7. 7

Renew your Employment Pass before it expires — your employer must apply for renewal through ESD.
